Why do it?

Bursa sits on hot springs, and Çekirge and Kükürtlü on the western slope are where the water comes up — the reason the Ottomans built here and the reason the neighborhood is full of thermal hotels. Two historic baths anchor it: Eski Kaplıca, built for Murad I in 1385 on a Byzantine bath and today run as part of the Kervansaray thermal hotel, and Yeni Kaplıca in Kükürtlü, built by Rüstem Paşa in 1552 after the spring eased Süleyman's gout. Both are hamams the old way — hot marble, a domed pool of genuinely hot mineral water, separate sections for men and women — and both are things the city actually uses, not heritage props.

Save this for the first cold snap; a Bursa winter afternoon in a hot-spring pool under a five-hundred-year-old dome is the argument for living here. Go with a small group — hamams are sociable, and this is one of our easiest 'meet people' outings — and bring flip-flops and your own towel to be safe. The practical bit we can't confirm from a distance: ⚠ VERIFY current day-visitor hours and the men's/women's arrangement at both baths before you go (Eski Kaplıca's thermal section lists 07:00–22:00 daily, but that page is written for hotel guests). Ask at the door; they're used to newcomers.
