Beyond the Obvious
Odunpazarı Modern Museum (OMM)
Kengo Kuma's stack of timber boxes in the middle of the Ottoman quarter — a serious contemporary art museum in a city of students.

Why do it?
OMM opened in September 2019 to house the contemporary art collection of the collector Erol Tabanca. The building is by the Japanese firm Kengo Kuma and Associates: timber volumes stacked and shifted on top of each other, drawing on the old houses around it, on Ottoman domes and on Japanese joinery — and on the timber market that gave Odunpazarı its name. Inside are three floors of galleries around a tall central atrium, a café and a shop, with exhibitions of Turkish and international artists drawn from the collection and from loans. The current exhibition, 'Echoes of the Earth', runs from 26 September 2026 to 12 September 2027.
The Smileys Take
Go for the building as much as the art — stand in the atrium and look up, then walk round the outside and see how the boxes sit among the old roofs. It is the best indoor plan in the city for a cold or rainy afternoon, and the café is a good place to meet a new friend who doesn't want a bar. Pair it with the old town and you have the classic Eskişehir first day. It's closed on Mondays, and ticket prices and hours are on omm.art — check before you go; children under twelve get in free. Groups of twenty or more are asked to contact the museum in advance, which matters if you're organising a Smileys outing.

Nothing is scheduled around this in Eskişehir yet. When a host plans it, it shows here — the calendar and hangouts are the places to look meanwhile.
