Why do it?

Ankara sits at nearly a thousand metres on the Anatolian plateau, and its winter is the real thing: nights well below zero, weeks of dry cold under hard blue skies, and several proper snowfalls a season that turn the citadel and the pines of Kuğulu Park into a postcard. It is the season the city is built for — the concert halls are full, the hamams are full, and salep and roasted chestnuts appear on every corner. For snow you can play in, there is Elmadağ, the mountain 25 kilometres east that gives the city its skyline: a small public ski area on its slopes at around 1,800 metres, free to enter, with sledge and ski hire from the huts when the snow is deep. Ankara treats it as a Sunday sledging hill more than a resort, and that's the honest description.

The Smileys Take

The first snow morning, go up to the citadel walls before it gets trampled — the view over a white city with the steppe hills behind is the one photo of Ankara that changes people's minds. Then Kuğulu Park, a salep, and a concert or a hamam in the evening. Elmadağ is a good group outing on the right day: shared car, real boots, a sledge, tea from the huts, back in the city by dark. Go with expectations set low: there is no snowmaking, the season depends entirely on snowfall, roads and facilities have been poorly kept for years, and the chairlift was reported broken in 2022 with no reliable word since — ⚠ VERIFY that lifts are running before promising anyone skiing rather than sledging. For real skiing, people drive on to Kartalkaya or Ilgaz. For a snowy afternoon with friends, Elmadağ is enough.
