Getting Around Bodrum: Dolmuş, Ferries, Taxis & the Airport

Bodrum is easy to explore without a car. The town centre is walkable, dolmuşes connect the peninsula, taxis are available when you need them, and ferries open up the Aegean.

Here’s what you need to know before you arrive.

🚶 Walking Around Bodrum

Bodrum centre is compact and easy to explore on foot.

The marina, castle, bazaar, restaurants, bars and nightlife are all close together. During summer, walking can actually be faster than driving because traffic gets heavy.

🚐 Dolmuş: The Local Way to Travel

The dolmuş is Bodrum’s main form of local public transport.

Routes connect Bodrum with places including:

• Gümbet

• Bitez

• Ortakent–Yahşi

• Yalıkavak

• Gümüşlük

• Gündoğan

• Türkbükü

• Turgutreis

• Torba

You normally don’t need to know the route number. Look at the destination displayed on the front of the minibus, flag it down along the route, and tell the driver where you want to get off.

💳 How do you pay?

Dolmuşes use the MuğlaKart system, and contactless bank cards are accepted on MUTTAŞ services.

If you’re visiting for a short time, you may not need to buy a card at all. Carrying a little cash is still useful, but don’t rely on cash being accepted on every vehicle.

🌙 What about at night?

This is where things change by season.

During the summer, some major routes operate until after midnight. Outside the main season, services become less frequent and the last dolmuşes can run much earlier.

If you’re staying in Yalıkavak, Gümüşlük or Turgutreis and planning a late night in Bodrum, check the last return service before you go.

🚌 The Two Bodrum Bus Stations

There are two locations visitors often confuse.

The Bodrum Merkez Garaj is the old central bus station in town and is where many local dolmuşes operate.

The Bodrum Intercity Otogar is now at Torba, outside the centre. This is where you’ll find long-distance buses and additional regional services.

If someone tells you to go to the “Bodrum Otogar”, check which one they mean.

🚕 Taxis

Taxis are available throughout Bodrum and are useful for:

• Late-night journeys

• Airport transfers

• Luggage

• Places not easily reached by dolmuş

• Short trips when you simply want convenience

Taxis operate with meters, and airport taxis use the same provincial tariff system as taxis in town.

For longer journeys, remember that distances around the peninsula add up quickly. A taxi from Bodrum to Yalıkavak or Turgutreis can be considerably more expensive than taking the dolmuş.

✈️ Getting From Milas–Bodrum Airport

Milas–Bodrum Airport (BJV) is approximately 37 km from Bodrum town.

The easiest options are:

• MUTTAŞ airport bus: A practical and affordable option connecting the airport with Bodrum.

• HAVAŞ: Availability and schedules can change, so check the current service before relying on it.

• Taxi: Available 24 hours and convenient if you have luggage or arrive late.

• Rental car: Best if you plan to explore several parts of the peninsula.

MUTTAŞ airport services are scheduled around flights, so check the current timetable for your travel date.

Allow extra time during the summer — traffic can make the airport journey considerably longer.

⛴️ Ferries & Day Trips

Bodrum is also a great base for exploring the Aegean by ferry.

Seasonal services connect Bodrum and the surrounding area with destinations including:

• Kos, Greece

• Datça

• Kalymnos

• Leros

• Other Greek islands on selected routes

🇬🇷 Taking the ferry to Kos

Kos is a popular day trip from Bodrum, but remember that this is an international border crossing, not simply a boat ride.

You need the appropriate passport and visa/entry status for Greece. Turkish citizens may have access to Greece’s seasonal express visa scheme, subject to the current rules.

Allow time for Turkish exit and Greek entry controls, particularly during busy summer days.

Always check the latest requirements before buying your ticket.

🇹🇷 Taking the ferry to Datça

The Bodrum–Datça ferry is a domestic route, so Turkish citizens can travel with a Turkish ID card. The service can also carry cars on scheduled sailings.

The crossing takes around two hours, making it a useful option if you want to explore Datça without driving all the way around the coast.

Ferry schedules are seasonal and can change because of weather, so check the current timetable before travelling.

🚗 Do You Need a Car?

For most visitors, no.

If you’re staying around Bodrum, Gümbet or Bitez, walking, dolmuşes and taxis are usually enough.

A rental car becomes more useful if you want to discover quieter beaches, villages and remote parts of the peninsula or make several stops in one day.

The downside is summer traffic and parking. In July and August, driving through Bodrum can be frustrating, especially around the centre.

Scooters and mopeds are common around Bodrum and can be convenient for experienced riders.

However, make sure you have the correct licence for the vehicle you rent, wear a helmet, and understand what the rental insurance actually covers.
