Why do it?

Kemeraltı is one of the oldest continuously working bazaars in the Mediterranean, and unlike the famous ones elsewhere it still mostly serves locals: spice sellers, fabric wholesalers, wedding-dress rows, coffee roasters you smell before you see. Deep inside are Ottoman caravanserais, mosque courtyards and the old Jewish quarter around Havra Sokağı with its historic synagogues. It's the layered, lived-in heart of the city, and it's ten minutes from the Konak ferry pier.

The Smileys Take

Go without a shopping list and get lost on purpose — the wrong turns are the point. Eat lunch standing up or at a tiny esnaf lokantası wherever the locals are queuing, and finish with a Turkish coffee in the courtyard of Kızlarağası Hanı. It's a market, not a museum: mornings on weekdays are relaxed, Saturdays are a crush. Nobody here is performing for tourists, which is exactly why we love it.
