Colourful Stairs of BalatIconic

The famous rainbow-painted staircase that's become one of Istanbul's most photographed spots. Best visited in the morning for fewer crowds.

Yıldırım Cad., Balat

Go early morning (before 9am) for empty stairs and better light for photos. By 11am on weekends it's packed.

Chora Church (Kariye Camii)Must Visit

A stunning 4th-century Byzantine church famous for its extraordinary Byzantine mosaics and frescoes. A UNESCO World Heritage site.

·Balat is best explored on foot — wear comfortable shoes as the streets are hilly and cobblestoned.
·The neighbourhood is about a 30-minute walk from Eminönü, or take the T5 Golden Horn tram (Balat stop), a bus, or a taxi.
·Weekday mornings are dramatically more peaceful than weekend afternoons, which can get very crowded.
·Balat and Fener are adjacent neighbourhoods that make a natural combined walking route — plan 3-4 hours to do both properly.
