If you've been looking for a night out that isn't another rooftop bar, here's one worth circling in the calendar. CARMEN by Antonio Gades and Carlos Saura, one of the most celebrated works in Spanish dance, comes to Zorlu PSM on Wednesday, November 11 for a single Istanbul performance.

It's performed by the Antonio Gades Company, the Madrid-based ensemble that keeps Gades' work on stages around the world. After Istanbul, it plays Ankara the following night, then heads to Belgium and the Netherlands in December.

A Story Everyone Half-Knows

Carmen began life in a French novella of 1845 and became world-famous through Bizet's opera. The plot is simple and fierce: a free-spirited woman, a soldier who can't let her go, and a rival who turns jealousy into tragedy.

Gades saw Carmen not as a femme fatale but as a woman fighting for her freedom. That idea sits at the heart of this version, where the story is told almost entirely through dance.

Where Dance Meets Cinema

Antonio Gades was a dancer and choreographer who turned flamenco into full-length theater. Carlos Saura was one of Spain's great filmmakers, with a lifelong fascination for music and dance.

CARMEN grew out of their film partnership. Saura's film version reached cinemas in 1983, and the stage production premiered in Paris later that same year. More than forty years later, it is still touring.

What to Expect

The staging is deliberately bare, so all the attention falls on the dancers. Live flamenco guitar and singing are set against recorded passages of Bizet's famous score, and that contrast is a big part of the show's character.

There is no spoken dialogue to follow. You don't need Spanish, Turkish or any prior knowledge of the plot. The emotions read clearly from the movement, the rhythm and the stamping of heels on the boards.
