How Do You Make Friends in Istanbul?

Making friends in Istanbul takes more than showing up once. Here’s how to meet people, build real connections, and find your community.

How Do You Make Friends in Istanbul?

You moved to Istanbul.

You found an apartment.

You figured out the metro.

You know where to buy your groceries.

Everything is going pretty well.

Then Friday arrives.

And you realize:

“Who am I going out with?” 😅

This is one of the strangest parts of moving abroad.

You can live in a city of millions and still feel completely alone.

And no, there isn’t something wrong with you.

Making friends as an adult is hard. Making friends in a new country is harder.

But it can be done.

👋 Stop waiting

The biggest mistake?

Waiting for people to come to you.

They probably won’t.

You have to get out.

Go to an event.

Join something.

Take a class.

Go to the same café.

Talk to someone.

Say yes when someone invites you somewhere.

And sometimes…

Send the first message.

You don’t have to become everyone’s best friend.

Just start talking to people.

🍻 Find something you actually like

Don’t join a hiking group if you hate hiking just because you heard it’s good for meeting people.

You’ll hate the hike and the people. 😂

Find something you genuinely enjoy.

Food.

Music.

Sports.

Photography.

Languages.

Sailing.

Dancing.

Games.

Whatever.

When you already have something in common, you don’t have to start with:

“So… what do you do?”

You already have something to talk about.

🔁 Go back

This one is important.

You go to an event.

You meet some nice people.

You exchange Instagram accounts.

Everyone says:

“Let’s meet again!”

Then nobody messages anyone.

We’ve all done it.

Go back next week.

You’ll see some of the same people.

Then again.

Eventually someone recognizes you.

You start talking.

Then you make plans outside the event.

That’s how acquaintances turn into friends.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Adult friendship is not school

When you’re young, friendship happens almost by accident.

You sit next to someone in class.

You eat lunch together.

You see each other every day.

Done.

As an adult?

Everyone has work.

Relationships.

Family.

Responsibilities.

Their own friends.

Their own lives.

So you have to make the effort.

“Want to grab a coffee?”

“Want to join us tonight?”

“Are you free Saturday?”

It’s not complicated.

But somebody has to ask.

🌍 Don’t live inside the expat bubble

Meeting other internationals is great.

They understand what it’s like to arrive somewhere new.

But if everyone you know is an expat, you’re only experiencing one side of Istanbul.

Meet Turkish people too.

Go to local places.

Learn about the city from people who actually grew up here.

And don’t worry if your Turkish isn’t great.

A conversation that starts in Turkish and ends in English is still a conversation.

You don’t need perfect language to make a connection.

☕ Make friends one coffee at a time

Big events are good for meeting people.

Friendships usually happen somewhere quieter.

Coffee.

Lunch.

A walk.

A drink after work.

A Sunday breakfast.

You meet someone you like?

Don’t just say:

“We should hang out sometime.”

Actually suggest a day.

“Coffee Thursday?”

Much better.

📱 Instagram isn’t a friendship

You can have 2,000 followers and nobody to call when you’re bored on Saturday night.

Following someone isn’t knowing them.

Liking their stories isn’t friendship.

And having 300 contacts in your phone doesn’t mean you have a social life.

Quality beats quantity.

Find the people you actually enjoy being around.

🧑‍💻 Don’t make work your entire life

This is especially easy if you’re working remotely.

You wake up.

Laptop.

Work.

Food delivery.

Netflix.

Sleep.

Repeat.

Congratulations.

You’ve moved to Istanbul and created your own international airport lounge. 😂

Get out.

Join something that has nothing to do with your job.

Your best friend here might have a completely different career, nationality and background.

That’s part of the fun.

🔁 Become a regular

Want an easy social strategy?

Pick something and keep showing up.

Same gym.

Same café.

Same language exchange.

Same weekly event.

Same club.

People become familiar.

Familiar becomes comfortable.

And comfortable makes conversation easier.

You don’t always need a new experience.

Sometimes you need to show up for the old one.

🏠 Look close to home

Istanbul is huge.

Really huge.

That person you met who lives on the other side of the city might be wonderful.

But if meeting them requires two metros, a bus and a small prayer…

You probably won’t see them very often. 😂

Don’t ignore your own neighborhood.

Your local café.

Your gym.

Your park.

Your building.

Your neighborhood events.

Your next friend might be five minutes away.

❤️ Some people will leave

This is part of expat life.

People come.

People stay.

People leave.

You might become close to someone who moves to London six months later.

It happens.

Don’t think:

“What’s the point?”

Enjoy the friendship.

Stay in touch.

And meet new people.

Your social circle will change.

That’s normal.

🥂 Find your people

You don’t need to attend every event in Istanbul.

Find your thing.

Maybe it’s hiking.

Maybe it’s dinner.

Maybe it’s language exchange.

Maybe it’s sailing.

Maybe it’s dancing.

Maybe it’s simply sitting around a table with people you like.

The goal isn’t to collect members.

It’s to help people actually meet.

❤️ Eventually, something changes

At first you ask:

“Where can I meet people?”

Then:

“Who’s going Friday?”

Then someone messages you:

“Where are you?”

You have a regular place.

People know your name.

Someone knows your coffee order.

You get invited to dinner.

You have someone to call when your landlord, washing machine or Turkish paperwork decides to ruin your day.

😂

And suddenly…

You realize you’re not looking for friends anymore.

You have friends.

That’s the moment Istanbul changes.

You’re no longer just living in a city.

You’re part of a community.

So don’t just find a place to live.

Find your people.
