Most tech conferences follow the same script. A large hall, a stage, rows of chairs, a coffee break with name badges and a hurried exchange of business cards. Istanbul App Week, taking place from November 2 to 8, 2026, is trying something different. The App Week format began in New York in October 2025, and this is its first Istanbul edition.

Instead of gathering everyone under one roof, the week spreads across the city. There are dinners and brunches, workshops and a hackathon, but also a padel tournament, a barbecue, a forest gathering and a morning run along the Bosphorus. The idea is simple: let Istanbul itself become the venue.

What Istanbul App Week is

The event is organized by Neon Apps and RevenueCat, and it is aimed at the people who build and grow mobile apps: founders, developers, investors, product managers, growth specialists and other technology professionals.

According to the organizers, the week is expected to bring together more than 2,000 participants across more than 30 gatherings and activities. These are organizer targets rather than confirmed attendance. At the time of writing, 18 events had been published, with more being added, and the real picture will only be clear once the week is over.

A week spread across the city

The announced program mixes the expected with the unexpected. On the professional side, there are product and app-growth sessions, an AI-focused workshop, an AI app-building hackathon, and an investor speed-dating session that pairs founders with potential backers in short, informal conversations.

Alongside these sit the more social formats:

  • Founder dinners and networking brunches
  • The App Founders’ Padel Cup
  • The App Founders BBQ Party
  • App Founders Into The Wild, a gathering in the forest
  • Growth Runners, an easy run along the Bosphorus followed by coffee

This is not one ticket to one big event. Each gathering has its own registration, its own eligibility rules and its own capacity limit. Some are aimed at founders, some at investors or specific professional groups, and some will fill up quickly. Not every event is open to the public. One happy hour, for example, is invite-only for founders whose apps earn more than $100,000 a year.

Networking without the name badge

The interesting part of Istanbul App Week is not that the app industry is meeting. It is how.

Anyone who has worked a conference floor knows its limits. Conversations are short, everyone is scanning the room for the next person to meet, and most contacts end up as a forgotten name in a phone. The real connections tend to happen elsewhere: at the dinner afterwards, on the walk to a bar, over a second coffee when nobody is in a hurry.

Istanbul App Week builds its program around those moments. It is hard to pitch someone while you are both out of breath on a padel court. A long table at a founder dinner invites a different kind of conversation than a booth does. A morning in the forest strips away titles and slide decks.

The bet is that trust grows faster through shared experience than through exchanged contact details. People remember who they ran with, who sat next to them at dinner, who helped them carry the barbecue supplies. Those memories are a stronger starting point for a business relationship than a two-minute introduction.

Why Istanbul

Few cities are as naturally suited to this kind of format. Istanbul sits between Europe, Asia and the Middle East, within a few hours’ flight of a huge range of markets. For founders building products with international users, that position matters.

The city also has a growing startup scene, a strong base of developers and designers, and a professional population that is increasingly international. Remote workers, foreign entrepreneurs and returning Turkish professionals now share the same cafés, coworking spaces and neighborhoods.

For most visitors, Istanbul is still mainly a tourism destination: the skyline, the food, the ferries. Events like Istanbul App Week add another layer to that identity. They present the city as a place to build a company, find partners and do business across borders.

That does not make Istanbul a global technology capital overnight, and a single week will not change that. But each gathering of this kind adds to the city’s reputation as somewhere worth coming to for work, not only for a holiday.

A familiar idea, seen from Smileys

At Smileys Community, this approach feels familiar. Our members are digital nomads, expats, entrepreneurs and international residents, and almost everything we do happens in real life: dinners, sailing trips, hikes, language exchanges, cultural outings.

The parallels are easy to see. A founder dinner works for the same reason a good Smileys dinner does: a shared table makes strangers talk. A forest gathering or a Bosphorus run does what our sailing and hiking days do, giving people something to experience together instead of something to discuss. And the informal meetups planned throughout the week are close cousins of a language exchange, where the conversation matters more than the agenda.

There is a broader lesson here. Professional networking and real friendship are not as separate as we tend to think. Many of the most useful connections in a new city start as friendships, and many friendships begin with a shared activity rather than an introduction.

People don’t necessarily need another networking group, another WhatsApp chat or another conference. They need meaningful reasons to meet.

If you want to take part

  • Dates: November 2–8, 2026
  • Where: Various locations across Istanbul, plus one retreat outside the city
  • Language: The largest event, Behind the Hit Apps (around 250 seats), has talks in both Turkish and English. Check each event page for the others.
  • Who it is for: App founders, developers, investors, product managers, growth specialists and technology professionals
  • Registration: Separate for each event, with its own eligibility criteria and capacity limit. Many use Luma and need organizer approval, so applying does not guarantee a place
  • Official website: istanbulappweek.com

Check the official website for the current schedule, locations and how to register for each gathering. With the week starting on November 2, places at the smaller, more social events may already be limited, so it is worth looking early.

A city that connects people

Whether Istanbul App Week reaches its announced numbers is something we will only know afterwards, and we will look back at how the week went once it is over. What is already clear is the thinking behind it: that a city can do more than host an event. It can shape how people meet.

A successful international city should offer more than a place to work and live. It should give people chances to connect and to feel they belong. Istanbul has the potential to become much more than a meeting point between continents. It can become a meeting point between people.
