You can live in Istanbul for years and still have a “one day” list: Topkapı, the Archaeological Museums, that museum you keep walking past on the way to coffee. A museum card can help turn those good intentions into actual afternoons out.
But before buying one, it helps to understand what “museum card” means. Standard Müzekart, MüzeKart 99 for eligible foreign residents, and the short-stay MuseumPass Istanbul have different eligibility rules and coverage.
For an international community like Smileys, choosing the right product matters: Turkish citizens, foreign residents and short-stay visitors have different options.
Which card can you buy?
The standard annual Müzekart is available to Turkish citizens, qualifying Mavi Kart holders and citizens of Northern Cyprus.
Foreign residents have a separate option: MüzeKart 99. People with a valid residence or work permit and an identification number beginning with 99 can buy it online at muze.gov.tr or through the Türkiye’nin Müzeleri app.
It costs 750 TL, lasts one year from purchase and allows up to two visits per participating site. It excludes National Palaces, including Topkapı and Dolmabahçe, and certain separately ticketed sites or sections.
There is an important student exception: the Ministry’s rules allow discounted Müzekart issuance to qualifying foreign students studying in Türkiye, subject to student identification and the relevant conditions.
If you are an international or Erasmus student, ask an official museum ticket office about your eligibility before purchasing a tourist pass. Do not assume every student card issued abroad qualifies.
For Turkish citizens, the official website currently lists the standard Müzekart at 200 TL. It lasts one year from purchase and covers participating museums and archaeological sites across Türkiye.
Eligible cardholders can use it when planning weekend trips and longer journeys around the country, subject to each site’s coverage and entry rules.
One detail older guides often get wrong: current official rules for the standard annual Müzekart describe two visits to each museum or archaeological site during the year. Do not buy it expecting unlimited repeat visits.
MuseumPass Istanbul is the short-stay option for foreign visitors. The official product page currently lists a price of €105, covering 13 participating museums for five days from your first museum entry.
Those five days begin when you first use the pass, rather than when you buy it.

What can you visit?
For standard Müzekart holders, Istanbul options include the Archaeological Museums, the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum, the Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam, Galata Tower and Rumeli Fortress, subject to opening status and the applicable entry rules.
Topkapı Palace is also covered by the standard Müzekart, which excludes its Harem section and Hagia Irene. At Dolmabahçe, the Selamlık section is excluded. “The palace accepts Müzekart” does not mean every room or section is included.
MuseumPass Istanbul has its own coverage rules. Do not use an annual Müzekart list as a substitute for checking the tourist pass’s included attractions. National Palaces’ published rules also identify Topkapı’s Harem and Hagia Irene as outside its MuseumPass coverage.
At Maiden’s Tower, check the boat charge separately: museum admission and transport are distinct items.
Hagia Sophia also needs separate planning. Its tourist gallery has a dedicated ticketing arrangement; an old list naming “Hagia Sophia Museum” is not a reliable guide to today’s entry system.
How to get your card
Eligible users can obtain a mobile Müzekart through the official Türkiye’nin Müzeleri app. Create an account, choose the appropriate card and follow the purchase or activation steps. The app generates the QR code used for entry.
For standard cardholders who already have an active card, the official instructions explain how to activate it using their Turkish identity number.
For a counter-issued Dijital Müzekart, the product page specifies that its first use must be at the museum where it was purchased, followed by conversion to mobile use.
Müzekart is personal to its holder and cannot be shared with friends or family. Carry the identification and supporting documents relevant to your card category, as staff may ask to see them.
Keep your phone charged and set up the app before reaching the entrance.
Where to buy in Istanbul
Standard Müzekart products can be obtained through authorized museum ticket offices and official digital channels, subject to the card category.
For current issuing locations, use the “Satış Noktaları” link for your chosen product on muze.gov.tr. Confirm opening hours and the documents required before traveling.
A sales point and a covered attraction are different things: buying a card at a venue does not mean the card includes every section of that venue.
Make it an afternoon out
For a first outing, choose one museum and leave time to enjoy it. The Archaeological Museums followed by a walk in Gülhane, or the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum followed by coffee around Sultanahmet, makes a manageable start.
If you are considering MuseumPass Istanbul, first list the museums you actually want to visit. Check their opening days, included sections and individual ticket prices, then compare the total with the pass price. A five-day pass offers less value if your plans include only one covered museum.
MuseumPass products are not valid for the separate night-museum program, so check daytime entry cut-offs as well.
Istanbul gives us plenty of reasons to say “we should go there sometime.” Pick a museum, invite a friend and put a date beside it.
