Istanbul can look very different when you're visiting for a week versus actually living here.

The Pros

🌍 It can feel very international

In many parts of Istanbul, you'll meet expats, international students, digital nomads, travelers and people from all over the world.

But your experience depends a lot on where you live and who you spend time with.

🍴 Food is a big part of life

One of the best things about Istanbul is the variety.

You can have a quick local breakfast, grab a döner, sit down for a long Turkish meal or try restaurants from completely different cuisines.

There are options for almost every budget, although prices have changed a lot in recent years.

🌊 The city is genuinely beautiful

This isn't just a tourist thing.

The Bosphorus, ferries, historic neighborhoods, waterfronts and sunsets are part of everyday Istanbul.

Even after living here for a while, you can still have those moments where you stop and think:

“Okay, this city is pretty amazing.”

🚇 You can live without a car

Istanbul has metro, tram, ferry, bus and other public transport options covering much of the city.

Once you understand the system, getting around becomes much easier.

And sometimes the ferry is simply the nicest way to commute.

🚗 Traffic is a real problem

This one needs no explanation if you've lived here.

A journey that looks short on a map can take much longer during busy hours.

And crossing from one side of the city to the other can turn a simple plan into a serious commute.

💸 Prices aren't always predictable

Istanbul isn't simply “cheap.”

If you're earning in a foreign currency, some things may still feel affordable compared with other major cities.

But everyday prices have risen significantly, and imported products, international restaurants, nightlife and good apartments can get expensive quickly.

Your lifestyle—and your income—make a huge difference.

🏠 Apartment hunting requires attention

Don't choose an apartment based only on beautiful photos or a great view.

Look at the building, heating, insulation, noise, neighborhood and landlord.

And there's one thing you shouldn't ignore:

earthquake safety.

Istanbul is in a seismically active region, so understanding the condition and history of the building you're considering is important.

📋 Some paperwork can be frustrating

If you're staying long term, you'll have more paperwork than a tourist.

🗣️ English can take you surprisingly far but Turkish helps

In international neighborhoods, you can often manage quite well with English.

But sooner or later, knowing some Turkish makes everyday life easier.

Talking to a landlord, fixing something in your apartment, dealing with a local business or simply making daily interactions smoother becomes much easier.

You don't need to become fluent.

Start with the basics.

Traffic.

Construction.

Neighbors.

Street life.

Nightlife.

Calls to prayer.

Ferries.

Dogs.

Istanbul has a lot going on and sometimes you can hear all of it.

If you want complete peace and quiet, choose your neighborhood carefully.

🗺️ The city is huge

This is one of the things newcomers underestimate.

Your apartment might be in Kadıköy, your office in Levent and your friends somewhere on the European side.

Suddenly, meeting for a coffee can involve an hour of travel.

In Istanbul, distance matters.

So, is Istanbul worth it?

That depends on what you want from a city.

If you want somewhere quiet, predictable and perfectly organized, Istanbul might frustrate you.

If you want energy, culture, food, history, nightlife, international connections and a city where something is always happening, you may love it.

But don't move here expecting a permanent vacation.

Istanbul has amazing days.

It also has frustrating days.

That's real life.

The question isn't whether Istanbul is perfect.

It isn't.

The question is whether you can imagine your everyday life here.
