Thinking about moving to Istanbul?

Good choice. But before you book your flight and start looking for an apartment, there are a few things worth knowing.

Istanbul is an incredible city to live in—but it isn’t always an easy one.

It’s huge, busy, social, chaotic, beautiful, affordable in some ways and surprisingly expensive in others.

And that’s part of the experience.

First: choose your area carefully

Istanbul is enormous, and where you live can completely change your experience.

The European and Asian sides have very different vibes, and even neighboring districts can feel like different cities.

Kadıköy, Cihangir, Galata, Karaköy, Nişantaşı and many other neighborhoods each offer something different.

Don’t choose an apartment just because it looks great online.

Think about your daily life.

Where will you work? Where will you go out? How often will you cross the Bosphorus?

Your neighborhood becomes your everyday Istanbul.

Getting around

Istanbul has an extensive public transport system—metro, tram, ferry, buses and more.

Once you figure it out, getting around becomes much easier.

But traffic is real.

A journey that looks short on a map can take much longer during rush hour.

The good news?

The ferries are part of the transport system too.

And having a Bosphorus view on your way home never gets completely boring.

What about the cost?

Istanbul can still offer good value compared with many major international cities, but don’t assume everything is cheap.

Local restaurants, markets, public transport and everyday services can be very reasonable.

International restaurants, imported products, nightlife, taxis and premium apartments can quickly increase your spending.

Your lifestyle will determine your budget.

Learn some Turkish

You can get by with English in many international areas, but Turkish will make everyday life much easier.

You don’t need to be fluent.

Learn the basics.

“Merhaba.”

“Teşekkürler.”

“Ne kadar?”

“Yardım eder misiniz?”

Even a little effort goes a long way.

Don’t forget the practical stuff

Living here also means dealing with things tourists don’t have to think about.

Depending on your nationality and situation, you’ll need to understand your residency and visa requirements before making long-term plans.

Healthcare is another thing to organize. Istanbul has many private hospitals and clinics that work with international residents, but having appropriate health insurance is important.

And when choosing an apartment, don’t look only at the view and the kitchen.

Ask about the building.

Istanbul is in an earthquake-prone region, so building condition and earthquake safety should be part of your decision.

Then comes the fun part

Once the practical things are sorted, Istanbul gives you a lot to enjoy.

Amazing food.

The Bosphorus.

Historic neighborhoods.

Nightlife.

Art and culture.

Weekend trips.

Ferries.

Long breakfasts.

And a city where you can almost always find something new to explore.

But eventually, something changes.

You stop asking:

“What should I see in Istanbul?”

And start asking:

“What are we doing Friday?”

That’s when you know you’re not just visiting anymore.

You’re living here.

So, should you move to Istanbul?

If you want a city that is quiet, predictable and perfectly organized, Istanbul might test your patience.

If you want energy, culture, food, history, nightlife, international connections and a city that rarely feels boring, you might love it.

Don’t expect Istanbul to be perfect.

Expect it to be interesting.

Give yourself time to figure it out.

Choose your neighborhood carefully.

Learn some Turkish.

Get to know the transport system.

And don’t spend all your time in the tourist areas.
