The Antalya Museum
One of Turkey's great archaeology museums — the gods of Perge, imperial statues and sarcophagi, most of it dug up nearby.
Why do it?
This coast was Pamphylia and Lycia, and the Antalya Museum holds what the region's ancient cities gave up: hall after hall of Roman statuary from Perge — emperors, gods and dancers — plus carved sarcophagi, prehistoric finds from local caves, and the ethnography of the Yörük nomads who summered in these mountains within living memory. It turns every ruin you'll visit afterwards from rubble into a story.
The Smileys Take
Go before you do the ancient-city day trips, not after — once you've stood in front of the Perge gallery, the empty colonnades out on the coast repopulate themselves in your head. It's air-conditioned, which makes it the honest answer to 'what do I do in Antalya in August at 3pm'. The walk along the cliff road makes getting there half the outing.
