Get lost in Kaleiçi, end at the old harbor
Ottoman houses, Roman walls and bougainvillea lanes sloping down to a tiny crescent harbor cut into the cliffs.
Why do it?
Kaleiçi is the walled old town Antalya grew out of — Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman layers stacked on the same few streets, with the fluted Yivli Minare rising over it all and the lanes running downhill to a small harbor tucked into a notch in the cliffs. Unlike a museum quarter, people still live here: laundry over courtyards, cats on doorsteps, a mosque that spent centuries as a church. It's the fastest way to understand that Antalya is an ancient port city first and a resort second.
The Smileys Take
Go early or at golden hour and get lost on purpose — the main lanes near the harbor are souvenir territory, and the quiet back streets a block away are where Kaleiçi actually wins. Walk in through Hadrian's Gate, drift downhill, and finish with a çay overlooking the harbor. In July and August treat it strictly as a morning or evening place; the lanes hold the heat. This is our default first walk with every newcomer.
Don't miss
- Yivli Minare — the fluted Seljuk minaret that is the city's symbol.
- Kesik Minare (the 'broken minaret') — a Roman temple turned church turned mosque, the whole city's history in one building.
- Hıdırlık Tower at the seaward corner, where the walls meet the cliff edge.
- The harbor viewpoint from the walls above — better than the quay itself.
