Why do it?

Built for the emperor Hadrian's visit nearly nineteen centuries ago, the three marble arches of Üçkapılar still stand in the old city walls on Atatürk Caddesi — and they're not roped off in a site somewhere, they're a working entrance. The old Roman road level sits below today's street, grooved by centuries of cart wheels, and you walk over it on your way into Kaleiçi. Few cities let you commute through antiquity.

Make it your default way into the old town rather than a destination of its own — through the gate, down into the lanes, done. Look down at the worn Roman roadway as you cross, and come past at night once, when the marble is lit. It's a twenty-minute stop that quietly resets your sense of how old this city is.
