Termessos, the eagle's nest
A mountain city even Alexander the Great gave up on — its theatre perched over a gorge, reclaimed by pines.
Why do it?
High in the mountains behind the city, inside a national park in Döşemealtı, Termessos is the ruin that ruins other ruins for you. The Pisidians built their city so high and so defensible that Alexander the Great looked at it and moved on. Because it was never rebuilt below, everything is still up there among the pines — and the theatre, on the edge of a gorge with mountains beyond, has a fair claim to the most dramatic setting of any ancient site in Turkey. You'll often have it nearly to yourself.

This is a proper walk, not a stroll — a steep uphill path from the car park in real mountain terrain, so wear actual shoes and carry water. We'd firmly point you at autumn through spring: the altitude softens the heat but the climb in July is still punishing, and on a clear winter day it's magnificent. You need a car (or a shared one — good small-group Smileys outing). Sit in the top rows of the theatre and let it go quiet.
