🎓 Student Istanbulkart: Can Erasmus Students Get One?

If you’re an Erasmus student in Istanbul, public transport is going to become part of your daily life very quickly.

Metro to university, ferry across the Bosphorus, bus home, Marmaray across the city — it adds up.

So one question is worth sorting out early:

Can Erasmus students get the discounted Student Istanbulkart?

The short answer: if you’re an Erasmus study student enrolled at an Istanbul university and your student status is recognized by the system, you can generally apply for a Student Istanbulkart.

Here’s what you need to know.

🎓 Erasmus Study Students

Incoming Erasmus students studying at an Istanbul university can generally access the student transport tariff once they’re properly registered as students.

The important part isn’t simply having “Erasmus” written somewhere on your documents. Your active student status needs to be recognized by the Istanbulkart application system.

So it’s usually a good idea to complete your university registration first and then apply.

⚠️ Erasmus Trainees: Check First

Erasmus study mobility and Erasmus traineeship mobility are not necessarily treated the same way for student transport eligibility.

If you’re attending university as an exchange student, you’re in the clearer category.

If you’re in Istanbul primarily for an Erasmus traineeship or internship, don’t assume you’re automatically eligible for the Student Istanbulkart.

Check with your host university or Istanbulkart before applying.

📲 How Do You Apply?

This changed recently.

As of September 1, 2026, new Student Istanbulkart applications are made online only.

Go to the official Istanbulkart website:

From there:

1. Open Online İşlemler / Bireysel İşlemler.

2. Register or log in using your phone number.

3. Create your individual Istanbulkart profile.

4. Select Kart Başvurusu.

5. Choose Öğrenci.

6. Complete the requested information and payment.

7. Choose how you’d like to receive your card.

You can have it delivered to an address within Istanbul, or after completing the online application and payment, choose collection from an Istanbulkart Application Center.

Already have a Student Istanbulkart? Don’t apply again. Existing Student Istanbulkart holders should continue using their current card.

🌍 What If Istanbulkart Doesn’t Recognize You as a Student?

This is the part that can be confusing for international students.

You may have completed your Erasmus registration but still find that the online system doesn’t recognize your student status.

Don’t immediately assume that means you’re not eligible.

Start with your university’s International/Erasmus Office or Student Affairs and ask them to check your student registration.

Because international students can have different registration and identification situations, your university is usually the best first place to resolve a mismatch.

If necessary, you can then contact Istanbulkart directly or visit an official service point for assistance.

Find Istanbulkart Application Centers & 153 Solution Points

One important distinction: Application Centers still provide Istanbulkart services, but new Student Istanbulkart card applications themselves are now initiated online.

📱 You May Not Need to Wait for the Physical Card

Here’s something useful if you’re new to Istanbul.

Istanbulkart says students can use Istanbulkart Mobile to pay for public transport with QR codes without using the physical card.

Once your student status is active, QR payments can use your student tariff, including applicable transfer discounts and distance-based pricing.

So if you’re waiting for the physical card to arrive, check Istanbulkart Mobile.

💳 Student Istanbulkart vs Abonman

These are two different things.

Your Student Istanbulkart gives you access to the discounted student transport tariff.

An abonman is a monthly transport package available to eligible users.

Whether you need one depends on how much you travel.

If you’re commuting across Istanbul to university almost every day, check the current abonman price and conditions.

If you live five minutes from campus and mostly walk, individual student fares may make more sense.

🔥 September–October 2026 Update: 1 TL Student Abonman

If you’re reading this right now, there’s a particularly useful temporary offer.

Students under 29 can purchase a Student Abonman once for just 1 TL between September 21 and October 17, 2026. The promotional abonman is valid for one month from the date of purchase.

If you already have an active Student Abonman, you need to wait until its validity/balance is completed before purchasing the promotional one — and you still need to make the purchase during the campaign period.

So if you’re eligible and under 29, this one is worth checking.

🚇 You’ll Use Istanbulkart Everywhere

Once you start moving around Istanbul, you’ll understand why getting your transport sorted early makes life easier.

Metro, tram, bus, Metrobüs, Marmaray, ferries — Istanbul’s public transport network is probably going to become one of the biggest parts of your everyday Erasmus routine.

And sooner or later, taking a ferry to the other side of the city will stop feeling like sightseeing.

It’ll just be Tuesday.

⚠️ Don’t Follow Old Istanbulkart Advice

This is important.

If you search online, you’ll find older instructions telling international students to take their passport, student certificate and photo directly to an Istanbulkart Application Center to apply.

Don’t rely on those instructions now.

The process changed on September 1, 2026, and new Student Istanbulkart applications are now made online.

If something doesn’t work, use this order:

University International/Erasmus Office → Official Istanbulkart website → Istanbulkart support/service point.

It’ll save you from following a three-year-old Reddit post across Istanbul with a folder full of documents you didn’t need.

If you’re an Erasmus study student enrolled at an Istanbul university, you can generally apply for the Student Istanbulkart once your student status is properly registered and recognized.
