You've just landed for your Erasmus semester. Someone asks where you live and you say "Moda." Then you look at your rental contract and it says Caferağa Mahallesi, Kadıköy. So do you live in Moda, Caferağa or Kadıköy?

All three. Istanbul has 39 districts and more than 960 official neighborhoods, plus dozens of everyday area names that don't match any administrative boundary. Once you know the difference between an ilçe, a mahalle and a commonly used area name, addresses here get much less mysterious.

🧩 Level 1: İlçe, the district

Istanbul stretches from the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara across two continents, divided into 39 districts: Kadıköy, Üsküdar, Beşiktaş, Beyoğlu, Şişli, Fatih, Sarıyer and so on. "It's in Istanbul" doesn't mean it's anywhere near you.

🏘️ Level 2: Mahalle, your official neighborhood

Each district is divided into official mahalleler. This is the name on your address, your rental contract and your paperwork.

📍 Level 3: The name everyone actually uses

Then there are names everyone understands that aren't official units at all. Moda is the classic example: much of what people call Moda is administratively Caferağa Mahallesi.

İstanbul → city
⬇️ Kadıköy → district (ilçe)
⬇️ Caferağa → official neighborhood (mahalle)
⬇️ Moda → the name people use

Not every place fits this neatly, but the idea explains a lot.

🚩 Taksim, Sultanahmet and Eminönü: three different cases

Taksim is not a district, and there is no Taksim Mahallesi either. It's simply the area around Taksim Square, inside Beyoğlu.

Sultanahmet, on the other hand, is an official mahalle, inside Fatih. So you can't assume every famous name works the same way.

Eminönü used to be its own district until it was merged into Fatih. The name never left: it's still on signs, ferry piers and in every conversation.

🎨 Beyoğlu: all the levels at once

Taksim, Cihangir, Galata, Karaköy, Tophane, Çukurcuma. You'll hear them all, but they aren't the same kind of thing. Cihangir is an official mahalle. Taksim, Galata and Karaköy are established area names with no matching mahalle boundary. Nobody thinks about this on a Friday night. They just say "Karaköy?" and everyone understands.

⚓ When the district and the center share a name

Beşiktaş and Kadıköy are official districts, but in conversation they usually mean the busy center around the ferry piers and the çarşı. That's why this exchange makes sense:

"Where do you live?"
"Beşiktaş."
"Where in Beşiktaş?"
"Etiler."

And why someone can truthfully say, "I live in Kadıköy, but I'm going to Kadıköy tonight."

🌏 "Asian side" isn't an address

In Turkish it's Anadolu Yakası, and it's far more than Kadıköy and Üsküdar: Ataşehir, Maltepe, Kartal, Pendik, Tuzla, Ümraniye, Beykoz and more. If someone says "it's on the Asian side," ask where.

The same goes for your university. "It's in Istanbul" tells you nothing about the commute, and many campuses sit far from the neighborhoods students want to live in. Check the district before you sign for a flat.

🚇 The map that really matters

After a while you build a second map in your head: metro lines, Marmaray, ferries, Metrobüs. Two places that look close can be awkward to travel between, and two that look far apart can be one direct ride. You stop measuring Istanbul in kilometers and start measuring it in connections.

This matters most when choosing where to live. A flat that's one direct metro or Marmaray ride from campus beats one that's closer on the map but needs two transfers.

📮 For official business, forget the nickname

"Moda" works for meeting friends. For your university registration, residence permit application, bank account and deliveries, you need the real thing:

  • İlçe: district

  • Mahalle: neighborhood

  • Cadde / Sokak: avenue / street

  • Bina No: building number

  • Daire No: apartment number

Your residence permit application asks for your address exactly as it appears on your rental contract, so copy it from there, mahalle included. Save it on your phone too. "Near the coffee shop behind the Migros" won't do, however accurate it feels.

🧠 Why this matters

At first, Istanbul is a handful of names: Taksim, Kadıköy, Beşiktaş, Sultanahmet. Then those names open up. Districts become neighborhoods, neighborhoods become streets, and streets become places you recognize.

Eventually someone sends you a location and, for once, you don't open Google Maps. You already know roughly where it is. That's when Istanbul stops feeling like a semester abroad and starts feeling like somewhere you actually live. 🇹🇷
