Take the Ferry at Sunset

One of the simplest ways to fall in love with Istanbul.

Free-ish1–2 hoursAbout an hour before sunset

Why do it?

For the price of a transit fare you get the skyline, the seagulls, the tea, and twenty minutes where the city finally slows down. It's the single best return-on-lira experience Istanbul offers.

The Smileys Take

Skip the expensive tourist cruise at least once and take a regular city ferry instead. Grab a tea from the vendor, sit outside on the leeward side, and don't look at your phone until you dock.

Best routes

  • Kadıköy → Beşiktaş — the classic crossing, skyline the whole way
  • Üsküdar → Eminönü — minarets and Topkapı silhouetted against the sun
  • Karaköy → Kadıköy — a 20-minute reset between two different Istanbuls

Good to know

  • Pay with an İstanbulkart — contactless bank cards work too but cost more
  • It gets windy on deck even in summer; bring a layer
  • Ferries run late but thin out in the evening — check the last return before you linger
  • The tea on board is part of the ritual, not an upsell
