Why do it?

A proper hammam — hot marble, a kese scrub that removes a layer of you, foam wash, then tea in a robe — is the most Ottoman thing you can still do with your afternoon. You walk out lighter in every sense.

The Smileys Take

The historic hammams are worth their tourist prices once — the architecture is the ticket. After that, do what locals do: find a neighborhood hammam at a third of the price. Either way, take the kese. That's the whole point.

Know before you go

Men's and women's sections (or hours) are separate in traditional hammams
You'll be given a peştemal (thin cotton wrap) — swimwear underneath is fine if you prefer
Book historic hammams ahead; neighborhood ones are walk-in
Hydrate before and after — the hot room takes it out of you
