A Proper Meyhane Night
Mezes, rakı, and three hours of conversation — dinner as Istanbul's favorite sport.
Why do it?
The meyhane is Istanbul's dinner theatre: cold mezes arrive on a tray, you point at what you want, hot plates follow, rakı turns cloudy over ice, and somewhere around hour two somebody at the next table starts singing.
The Smileys Take
Pace yourself on the cold mezes — the tray is an opening argument, not the menu. Rakı is drunk slowly, with water, over food, across an entire evening. If you're up for the classic chaos, Nevizade in Beyoğlu; for the local version, Kadıköy's back streets.
The ritual
- Pick 3–4 cold mezes for the table, then one or two hot ones, then fish if you're hungry
- Rakı comes with a water glass and ice — mix to taste, sip, don't shoot
- Şerefe (to honor) is the toast; eye contact matters
Where to look
- Nevizade Sokak, Beyoğlu — the loud, historic, touristy-but-fun strip
- Kadıköy çarşı back streets — younger, cheaper, more local
- Kuzguncuk and Beylerbeyi for a quiet waterfront version
