An Evening in Üsküdar
Tea by the water, the Maiden's Tower lit up, and the least touristy sunset in Istanbul.
Why do it?
Üsküdar's waterfront looks straight back at the entire European skyline — Topkapı, Hagia Sophia, the Galata Tower — with the Maiden's Tower floating in front. Locals line the shore with tea and simit every evening; tourists mostly never make it across.
The Smileys Take
Take the ferry over (that's half the experience), walk the promenade south toward the Maiden's Tower viewpoint, and buy tea from a shore vendor rather than sitting in a café — the seawall is the best seat. If you have an extra hour, the waterfront walk north to Kuzguncuk's wooden houses is the quiet masterpiece of the Asian shore.
The evening
- Ferry from Eminönü (15 min) or Beşiktaş (10 min)
- Promenade south for the Maiden's Tower and skyline views
- Tea + simit from a vendor at the seawall as the lights come on
- Optional: 20-minute waterfront walk north to Kuzguncuk
Good to know
- Üsküdar is one of the city's more traditional districts — it's lively, dry-ish, and family-heavy in the evenings
- The Marmaray gets you back under the Bosphorus in minutes if the ferries have thinned
