Beyond the Obvious
Historic Istanbul Without Losing Your Mind
Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and Topkapı — a realistic plan instead of a death march.
Why do it?
The monuments earn the hype — Byzantine domes, Ottoman courtyards, the Basilica Cistern's underwater columns. What ruins them is trying to do everything at noon in a crowd. Sequenced right, it's one of the world's great walking days.
The Smileys Take
Two major monuments a day, maximum — pair them with the sea walls, a köfte lunch, and the courtyards that don't need tickets. When the crowds peak mid-afternoon, walk downhill to Cankurtaran and the water, where old Istanbul is suddenly, blessedly empty.
A sane sequence
- 08:30 — Hagia Sophia at opening, before the tour groups
- 10:30 — Basilica Cistern or Topkapı (pick one, seriously)
- 12:30 — köfte or esnaf lokantası lunch off the main drag
- 14:00 — Blue Mosque courtyard + Hippodrome, then drift to the sea walls
Good to know
- The T1 tram (Sultanahmet stop) is the easiest arrival
- Mosques close to visitors at prayer times — plan around them
- Dress modestly; scarves are provided at mosque entrances
- Sultanahmet restaurant prices run high — eat one street back
