Museums, galleries and cultural spaces you can enjoy for free, or on the right day of the week.
Istanbul’s cultural life is one of the best things about living here, and a surprising amount of it costs nothing. Some places are always free. Others open their doors for free on one day a week, or at certain hours, or for certain visitors.
Whether you’ve just arrived, you’re working remotely from the city or you’ve been here for years, here’s where to start, and exactly when each place is free.
Before you go: almost every venue here is closed on Mondays, and most also close on New Year’s Day and the first day of the religious holidays (Ramazan and Kurban Bayramı). Salt and the İş Bankası Museum also close on May 1. Opening hours and free-entry rules change, so check the official website, linked under each venue, before you set off.
Always free

10. Müze Gazhane, Kadıköy
A former gasworks in Hasanpaşa, on the Asian side, turned into a cultural complex. It includes a Climate Museum, a Cartoon and Humor Museum, a library that’s open around the clock, two municipal theater stages and a big public square that hosts concerts and talks.
The children’s science center is closed for maintenance and Galeri Gazhane is between exhibitions, so check what’s open before you go. The venue doesn’t publish admission details, so check each event listing too.
Museum hours: Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00
Address: Kurbağalıdere Caddesi 125, Hasanpaşa, Kadıköy
How to find more free culture
Follow the venues. Free talks, screenings and workshops are usually announced on each venue’s website and social media first.
Look beyond admission. A museum that charges for entry may still host free talks, workshops or special events.
Check the municipal calendar. The Istanbul municipality lists free concerts, exhibitions and workshops across the city at kultur.istanbul.
Check the language. Not every tour, talk or workshop is in English. If it matters to you, ask before booking.
Paying anyway? If you visit a lot of museums, our guide to Istanbul’s museum cards explains which pass is worth it.
